Masters of the Steel Drum – 40th Anniversary Celebration
Join us as we celebrate 40 years of the Cal Poly Humboldt Calypso Band, founded by Dr. Eugene Novotney. This year’s special guests include the “Paganini of the steelpan” Liam Teague, rising star Khan Cordice, and 17-year-old prodigy Jaden Teague-Núñez.
The Cal Poly Humboldt Calypso Band brings the vibrant sounds of Trinidad to the stage with high-energy “Calypso” and “Soca” music. Influenced by master composers like Ray Holman and Len “Boogsie” Sharpe—who have written original works for the group—the band’s legacy includes alumni performing at Trinidad’s National Panorama Competition and leading steelbands nationwide.
Liam Teague, Professor of Music at Northern Illinois University, is celebrated worldwide for pushing the artistic boundaries of the steelpan, performing with Grammy-winning artists, and composing for leading steelbands. Khan Cordice, Antigua and Barbuda’s most decorated Panorama arranger, is an award-winning musician, composer, and educator whose work has been showcased everywhere from Buckingham Palace to Dubai Expo 2020. At just 17, Jaden Teague-Núñez has already made history as the first steelpan player to win the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artists Competition and will debut with the CSO in 2025.
$8 per person.
